Today in the studio I have been exploring new ways of making recycled beads. I already have upcycled paper bead jewellery in my Etsy shop, but I have been trying to think of other materials that can be used for eco friendly jewellery- and after a bit of You Tube research I have found quite a few ideas!
Personally I find it really important to recycle as much as possible, and have done so for many years. I live on a semi rural property and love my routine of watching the wildlife – I’ll post about this in the near future – and for me recycling is paramount in maintaining the natural environment in which I live and my fellow wildlife live.
So having an eco sustainable art practice is a natural progression for me as an artist. I try to accomplish this within my ceramic practice : recycling all clay, firing only when the kiln is full, buying local and using handmade tools.
Within my jewellery making practice I also try to maintain this principle. So back to the You Tube research…
I have found some cool tutorials on fabric beads, beads made from plastic shopping bags and beads made from plastic bottles. Of course all these tutorials benefit from the individual creativity of the watcher.
So I spent today experimenting making beads made from fabric upcycled from old dresses circa 1980s – yes old fashion I have held on to for way to long!
And here is an example of today’s creations :
Love how you look for eco friendly ways to make jewelry. Here is a link I think you might like:
