Pit Fired Sculptures

I have been pit firing now for about seven years, and during this time have developed and refined techniques that are unique to me.

Originally I became interested in Pit firing during my Honours year in ceramics at University: I was interested in exploring the “function” of ceramics… what would it be in the 21st century? With mass produced bowls, cups, etc how could the ‘potter’ make a living? I concluded that the ‘function’ of ceramics would be a contemplative and meditative use. This theme then developed further in my masters and PhD thesis.

A couple of  images that appears in following slideshow have been published in ceramic art books.  The sculpture Water Spiral  is published in the Lark Publishing book 500 Ceramic Sculptures, and the image Sacrificial Landscape is published in Schiffer Publisher’s Ceramics Today. 

I have conducted pit firing workshops for Ceramics Victoria and at my own studio, which have proved to be both fun and beneficial for myself and the workshop participants.
